The Barnard Chemistry Department mourns the loss of beloved teacher, treasured colleague, Professor of Chemistry, and Barnard College Medalist Sally Chapman to cancer on June 2, 2012. During her 37 years at Barnard, Sally served as a mentor and role model not only for the thousands of students she taught but also her many colleagues. Smart, fearless, and dynamic, Sally helped build the Chemistry Department into what it is today. She was particularly proud of the community of alumnae who stayed connected with the Department throughout the years. Sally so appreciated the cards and letters, calls, visits, and other expressions of support while she was among us. We have been touched deeply by the outpouring of affection towards Sally and sincerely appreciate the many messages and visits from current students, alumnae, and the entire Barnard community at this difficult time. She would naturally deflect the attention given her, yet be moved to know how much everyone cared. We take comfort in continuing to pursue the goals she championed.
In lieu of flowers, Sally's family suggests that donations be made to The Sally Chapman Fund:
